Time for a change

So, 2019 is finally winding down. I'm happy to say goodbye to it and am looking forward to 2020 because I'm feeling optimistic. I can't say why, exactly, but when I think of the year ahead my heart lifts a little, so I'm going to listen to my heart, despite the scandals, rumors, lies, and devastating events that are sure to come in the new year.

We are at the start of an election season that will be raucous and divisive, and an impeachment trial that is bound to upset most of us, whether for or against acquittal. This is living history and despite the accompanying angst I'm glad to be present for it. Meanwhile Australia is burning and the Earth is warming much faster than predicted, events I find alarming.

With all that's going on it's strange to be optimistic, but I can't shake the feeling. Maybe I trust humanity to do the right thing, or maybe I suspect that the headlines aren't always correct—there's more than a lot of good out there. A few days ago I read an article about the revival of ground fish, in some cases 50 years faster than predicted. This feat was accomplished because groups of people, who often held diametrically opposing views, came together, found a solution, and followed through.

It isn't easy to admit that we don't know all the answers, that our opinion about something might be dead wrong, or that our "facts" just don't hold up. But if we can get over that hump—and yes, it's a big one—humanity is capable of accomplishing great things. Our history proves it.

We have come through a divisive decade and I know we're all yearning for a little peace, a little compassion, some understanding, and new directions. We can do this. I might be a Pollyanna, but it's time for a little optimism. 2020 is just the beginning.

Happy New Year!
