Super Tuesday has come and gone and I can't say I'm happy that the last Democratic candidate standing will be a choice between two old white men. Really? Given the talented and diverse field we started with, this doesn't say much for American's decision-making prowess.
I favored most of those candidates over the year, and could have supported any of them. But I wanted a woman. It was disappointing to see them drop off one by one and Warren's withdrawal left me sad and gloomy. No, actually, it left me angry. Especially when the following day I saw newspapers and pundits singing her praises. What a great campaign she ran, what good ideas, what forward looking, well thought out plans. What determination.
What bullshit. Where were they when Warren was repeatedly ignored by the same media and pundits? Why was she seldom mentioned as the field narrowed, her name left off lists and even a poll, her campaign reportedly "struggling."
"Struggling" is the death knell for politicians. So once again we can't vote for a woman to be president. Why is it that other countries have been electing women leaders for years but the USA can't? Why did Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir, Isabelle Peron, Margaret Thatcher, or Benazir Bhutto, have the support of their citizens? Were they "likable?" Why have Iceland, the Philippines, Norway, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Poland, Germany and many more had female presidents or prime ministers but not us? Why can't we do that?
March is Women's History Month, the time of year when we celebrate all those women who worked and struggled and managed and achieved good and positive things for our country. Now we can add the names of Williamson, Gabbard, Gillibrand, Harris, Klobochar and Warren as women who made history running for the office of president in 2020. It's seriously disappointing to have to state that they failed for lack of a penis.
